How Avoid Freezer Burn

There’s nothing worse than saving a hearty pot roast for a rainy day, then taking it out to thaw, only to find it is discolored and unappetizing — it’s suffered from the dreaded freezer burn. While this is not typically dangerous, we all know it’s highly unappetizing. Avoid freezer burn by keeping the water in the meat and keeping the oxygen out.

Don’t Skimp on Your Freezer Bags

A regular old zip bag isn’t going to do the trick here, folks! Always buy freezer grade bags; and while there are great value brands out there, springing for a name brand will probably cost less than replacing the freezer burnt meat in your freezer. It also helps to wrap the contents in wax paper or plastic wrap before inserting it into the zip bag. Another little trick is to make sure the bag is not too large for its contents and to rotate items in the freezer regularly.

Use a Vacuum Sealer

A vacuum sealer has essentially the same effect as wrapping and bagging your frozen items; it just happens to be a little bit more effective. This is particularly because the exposure to air inside the bag is minimized, preventing sublimation at a higher level.

Invest in Freezer Repair

Even with the best packaging, you might still find freezer burn if your freezer isn’t up to the task! Keep a thermometer in your freezer if you suspect it might be the culprit of your freezer burnt dinners: if the inside rises above zero degrees Fahrenheit, it is likely that it is not preventing freezer burn at all. With the too-high temperature, water will melt and refreeze on the food products, creating that nasty and unappetizing look that we know to be freezer burn.

Pros and Cons of a French Door Refrigerator

French door refrigerators are becoming more and more popular in kitchens across America, and for good reason. This style of refrigerator offers many benefits to homeowners, beyond just being visually appealing. However, no appliance is perfect, which is why there are definitely pros and cons of a French door refrigerator.

Pros

Easier Access to Food

Since you have the option of opening just one side of your refrigerator, you can find the food you’re looking for more quickly, especially since French door refrigerators have wider shelves and bigger door bins for better storage and access.

More Top Shelf Space

Since they’re so wide, French refrigerators give you a lot more room for food storage, especially on the top shelf. Most models also let you change the height of the top shelf, allowing for even better storage.

A Deeper Freezer Drawer

If you’re big on boxed freezer items, a French door refrigerator is definitely a good choice for you. The freezer drawer offers deep storage space and often also has a chiller drawer, with an easy adjusting temperature to cool specific foods, such as deli platters and ice cream.

Cons

Not Good for Small Kitchens

Since French door refrigerators are so wide, you may have a hard time fitting into a space if your kitchen is on the smaller side. They take up more room than traditional two door refrigerators, so this is something you’ll need to account for when deciding what model to purchase.

Higher Energy Usage

French door refrigerators offer a lot more features, which typically means they use more energy. Higher energy usage can increase your utility bills, and potentially lead to more repairs.

How to Defrost Your Freezer

Don’t you love opening your freezer to find it looks like a scene from Ice Age inside? Yeah, we didn’t think so. If you don’t have a self- defrosting freezer, you’ll have to take a day every so often to do the job yourself. In case you’re not sure, here’s how to defrost your freezer.

How to Defrost a Freezer

Take the Food Out

This is potentially the hardest part, especially if there is a lot of ice build up. Remove all the food and place it in a spare freezer or your fridge — or you can just cook some of it.

Take Out the Removable Parts

This is when you turn the freezer off too. Once it’s off, remove any drawers or shelves from the freezer and set them aside to wash later on.

Melt the Ice

This is probably the most time-consuming part since you have to wait while the freezer defrosts. If you’re in a hurry, you can pour small amounts of hot water on the ice or use a hairdryer to melt it faster. You can also use a towel to catch any dripping water.

Clean the Interior

As the ice melts, use a spatula to chip off the larger pieces and place them in your sink to melt further. Don’t scrape too hard though or you’ll risk damage the freezer. Once all the ice is out, wipe down the freezer and the removable parts with a cleaning solution.

Let it Dry

Allow your freezer to dry completely before turning it back on. Once it’s dry, replace everything you took out, and turn it back on to use.

Troubleshooting Your Fridge’s Temperature

Let’s get one thing straight — if your fridge is not at the right temperature, your food won’t stay cold and you’ll have to throw it out because it’ll go bad. That means no burgers, no crisp lettuce for salads, and no leftovers. That’s why we need to make sure your unit stays cold and fix your fridge’s temperature.

Troubleshooting Your Fridge’s Temperature

Try turning the thermostat to a colder temperature.

Sometimes your thermostat can get knocked down by moving food or on its own. To fix this, adjust it to the temperature you want and mark it with a waterproof marker in case the thermostat gets knocked out of place later on.

Clean the condenser coils behind the fridge.

If your fridge’s coils get too dirty, they can stop working properly and cause your refrigerator to feel warm. Vacuuming the coils to remove the dust and dirt can help your refrigerator run well again and restore its proper temperature.

Check the door seals.

Run your hand over the seal of your refrigerator to check for any tears or other damage that could be letting cold air out of your fridge. Even if you don’t find damage, insert a piece a paper between the door and seal to see if it stay. If it doesn’t, it’s probably letting air out and will need to be cleaned or replaced.

bottom-mounted-freezer-speedy-refrigerator-service

Pros and Cons of a Bottom-Mounted Freezer

Just like people, fridges and freezers come in all shapes and sizes. Different models offer different pros and cons and require different kinds of maintenance and repairs. When it comes to the bottom-mounted freezer, there are a few things you should know before you get to.

The Good

They’re Great for Small Spaces.

Since the freezer is located below the fridge, you can easily fit certain bottom-freezer models into smaller spaces in your kitchen or garage. If you’re short on room for your appliances in an apartment or otherwise, this is a good option.

They Offer More Storage Space.

A big issue with side-by-side fridges/freezers is that the ice maker in the freezer usually limits the amount of storage space you can use. You can also customize the drawers and shelves in your bottom-mounted freezer to allow for different storage options. Plus, if your fridge has french doors, you also get more storage space in the fridge itself.

The Door Slides Instead of Swings.

While this may seem trivial, being able to quickly slide the freezer drawer open instead of having to swing it open can save you time and allow you to quickly grab what you need.

The Bad

They Cost More.

While the price will depend on the size and model you choose, bottom-mounted freezers tend to be more expensive in general. Beyond the initial buying price, the models that include French doors usually aren’t as energy efficient as other styles, costing you more in energy and repairs.
