WARNING: Be Careful With Ice

Did you know that the FDA regulates ice as a food item? This means it requires a specific set of standards and precautions to be served in a restaurant or hotel and we need to take these precautions in our own life as well. The number one word to remember when you think of ice is clean– it should be packaged clean, stored clean and served clean each and every day. Here are some tips to help you achieve this:

Handling Ice at Home
When you’re handling ice in your everyday life, it can be easy to become careless. But it is important to remember that people are going to ingest that ice in some way, shape or form so you have to treat it the same way you would any other type of food. Here are some tips to keep ice sanitary in your home:

  • Use clean utensils or tongs to remove ice from the tray.
  • Don’t be lazy and scoop ice with your glass.
  • Don’t lay any food items in your freezer’s ice tray.

Handling Ice During a Tailgate
If you’re attending your favorite team’s game this Sunday, here are some tips you can’t afford to miss out on:

  • NEVER place raw food in the same cooler that you’re storing beverages.
  • If there isn’t enough room for storage, seal raw meats in a aluminum foil and a Ziploc bag to keep them separate from the rest of the cooler’s contents.

Handling Ice at a Holiday Party
It’s officially holiday party season and the planning should already be taking place. One thing you might glance over is the sanitation of your bar area but we’re going to tell you why this is a big mistake!

  • Ice and beverages that are left open to the air are just as susceptible to foodborne illness as any other food item.
  • Before placing ice in a bucket or tray, clean it out thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Place a pair of tongs in a separate bucket and DON’T just lay them on top of the ice.

At Speedy Refrigerator Service, we provide same day service within one hour for all makes and models of refrigerators, ice makers and freezers. If your ice maker is producing less ice or no ice at all, we can have a look and assess the problem quickly so you are up and running before the holidays.

Speedy Ways To Do Thanksgiving

Everyone is looking for ways to make the holiday season easier and that starts in the kitchen. There are a ton of quick and easy recipes for holiday treats online, but that isn’t where the real time saving comes in. You don’t realize how much time you waste being unorganized in the kitchen and these tips are going to help whip you into shape.

Use a Cooler
This might seem a little out of place because this likely isn’t an outdoor gathering, but just listen to the benefits. If someone wants a condiment or needs a beverage, they can fiddle around in the cooler instead of your well organized refrigerator. The cooler should also be kept outside of the kitchen to cut down on the traffic in this already busy room. Give it a try this Thanksgiving and see if it helps.

Make Appetizers Accessible
Once you have taken your meat and cheese platter out of the fridge, it is no longer your responsibility. Get a nice cutting board and leave a knife and plates on the table so that people can help themselves. This will allow you the time you so desperately need in the kitchen rather than passing out the appetizers.

Utilize Your Refrigerator
Your Thanksgiving refrigerator game plan should have been drawn up weeks ago so now you can execute. Hopefully you did a nice job of cutting down on unnecessary groceries this past week so that your refrigerator is relatively empty going into the big day. Make sure you designate a shelf to leftovers and commit to it early on so you don’t waste time rearranging things later in the night.

Hire a Server
If you can afford it, a server is going to make your life significantly easier this holiday season. All you have to do is the preparation and then your server will take care of the serving, cleaning and logistics of the day. When was the last time you really sat down and enjoyed a Thanksgiving with your family? Well, this is your chance.

Broken refrigerators are another giant waste of time, but we can cut down on the headaches. If you live in Nassau County, New York City or Queens, Speedy Refrigerator Service can provide fast, 1 hour service with a satisfaction guarantee. There really is nothing better than Speedy service around the holidays.

How to Turn Off Refrigerators for Long Vacations

Are you a snowbird or just someone who travels a lot during the holiday season? If so, it might be a good idea to disassemble your refrigerator while you’re away. Don’t worry, the New York summer and your well maintained refrigerator will be waiting for you when you get home! Here is a step by step explanation of how to break down your refrigerator for an extended vacation:

Step 1: If your refrigerator has an ice maker, that should be the first thing you shut off. Then, pull the refrigerator away from the wall and locate your water valve and turn it to the off position.

Step 2: This is when you should start removing all of the food from your unit. Try and plan out your grocery shopping so there isn’t a ton of wasted food at this time. Once you have done this, you can go ahead and unplug your refrigerator.

Step 3: If you have a water dispenser, you’ll need to empty the reservoir to preserve it for your return. It should be behind your produce drawers and you can go ahead and remove it.

Step 4: Take some soap and water and gently clean the inside of your unit. Be sure to remove all drawers, shelves and anything else you can to give them the best clean possible. If it is dirty now, the smell will be unbearable when you return home.

Step 5: Take your most trusted box of baking soda and place it on a shelf. Take another box and leave that in your now empty freezer. You should also leave your doors open to allow for ventilation and air flow through your refrigerator.

When you get back to your home in New York, there might be some things you need tightened up. Well, lucky for you Speedy Refrigerator Service is the premiere refrigerator repair company in the area. We have been in business for over 75 years and we aren’t stopping anytime soon.

What Does and Doesn’t Belong in the Fridge

When you go to the grocery store and glance down the refrigerated aisle, you’ll see meats, cheeses, yogurts and much more. People know these foods need to be refrigerated, but there are quite a few items that people debate over. While everyone has their preference, these do’s and do not’s for refrigeration will come in handy the next time you’re putting away the groceries.

Does

  • Eggs- You need to refrigerate eggs due to threat of salmonella bacteria. Some other countries in the world like the UK don’t need to refrigerate eggs because they use a different processing process.
  • Cheese- Most soft cheeses like ricotta should ALWAYS be refrigerated. You can get away with not refrigerating Parmesan or Romano, but make sure you always check the instructions.
  • Soy Milk- This popular healthy form of milk needs to be refrigerated after opening. It can last for about a year in storage, but once it is opened, it won’t last more than a few hours without the refrigerator.

Doesn’t

  • Tomatoes- Keeping tomatoes in the fridge is pointless and it actually has a negative effect on their taste. The colder temperatures make them ripen slower and this actually gives them that mealy taste. That is why you should only buy tomatoes when you know you’re going to use them.
  • Onions- Onions will soften if they are kept in the fridge and that will eventually lead to them becoming moldy. Store them in a bin or container in a shaded part of your kitchen for the best taste.
  • Bread- If you don’t plan to eat bread within a week of purchase, wrap it up and store it in the freezer. The fridge won’t prolong it’s life long enough to cancel out the negative effects it has on the taste of the loaf. Nobody likes dry bread!

At Speedy Refrigerator Service, it is our job to make sure your refrigerator is working order. We provide one hour emergency service to the NYC, Long Island and Queens areas 365 days a year. We know refrigerator malfunctions don’t work around your schedule, but we do!
