French Door vs. Side-by-Side Refrigerators

If you
are looking to buy a new refrigerator, there are many factors that
you have to take into consideration. Size, storage space, color, and
extra features can all play a key part in your decision, but many
people start limiting their options based on the refrigerator’s
style.

There
are four main styles of refrigerators: top-freezer, bottom-freezer,
side-by-side, and French door. Earlier this week, we compared and
contrasted top-freezer models with their bottom-freezer counterparts.
This article will attempt to do the same, but with side-by-side and
French door styles.
Side-by-Side
Side-by-Side
refrigerators are characterized by the fresh food and freezer
compartments being divided vertically, rather than horizontally. Both
sides take up the full height of the refrigerator, with the fresh
food section usually being the bigger of the two.
Pros
  • Both the refrigerator and freezer sections are at eye-level.

  • The doors don’t take up the full width of the refrigerator, so they
require less room to fully open.

  • This style offers the most freezer space out of any model.

Cons
  • The narrow sections of these refrigerators make it impossible to
store wide items such as platters.

  • More freezer space results in less room for fresh food storage.

  • Side-by-side refrigerators are not energy-efficient.

  • This style is more expensive than top-freezer and bottom-freezer
    models.

French
Door

French door refrigerators are a combination of side-by-side and
bottom-freezer styles. The fresh food section (located on top) has
two doors that open from the middle, and the freezer is usually
accessed via pull-put drawer.

Pros
  • Wide shelves allow for easy storage of platters and pizza boxes.

  • The fresh
food section is conveniently located at eye level and is very
    spacious.
  • Like the
side-by-side style, the doors are narrow and don’t require much
    space to be opened.
  • These
models typically offer the most luxurious features.
Cons
  • The
freezer section is low to the ground and you must bend over to
    access it.
  • French
door refrigerators have the highest starting price – by far.
