Check the Supply Line

Make Sure the Fill Tube Isn’t Frozen

Check to see if something has caused ice to back up around the mechanism—this can cause the fill tube to freeze. Try removing the blockage and see if your cubes return to normal size.

Check on the Solenoid

Myth: The dial inside the fridge tells me exactly how cold it is.
Fact: This actually isn’t true. The only way to accurately measure the temperature inside of your fridge is to use a standing thermometer. Buy one next time you are at the store and make sure your fridge is running at a temperature below 40ºF!

Myth: To keep my refrigerator from overexerting itself, I should leave food sitting out to cool.
Fact: This one would also be false. While taking food directly from the stove to the fridge isn’t recommended, leaving it out isn’t either. If you want to store something away for later, let it sit for about ten minutes, and then seal it up and stow it away. Food should not remain unrefrigerated for more than two hours.

Myth: Leaving frozen meat out on the counter will defrost it faster.
Fact: While this one is technically true, it doesn’t make it any safer. Even if the meat is frozen, that doesn’t mean it is not capable of being contaminated with bacteria. Plan out your meal in the morning and defrost things in the refrigerator. That way they have more time to defrost and you will ensure yourself a safer meal to consume.

The History of the Refrigerator

Before the refrigerator, many homeowners used an ice delivery system to keep their food from spoiling. Ice would come in on a Monday and be placed in an ice box/cellar to help it stay frozen throughout the week. These 19th century families would then bury meats, cheeses and other refrigerated products in these cellars to be consumed later. The problem here was that the liners of these cellars were unreliable, and the ice would only last between 5-7 days. Someone needed to find a better way. Luckily, they did. It was called the refrigerator.

The Beginning
Like most major inventions, the refrigerator can trace its roots back to a series of smaller inventions:

1748- At the University of Glasgow, William Cullen developed the first artificial refrigeration system. For an unknown reason, he never tried to use his discovery for practical purposes.
1805- US inventor Oliver Evans designed the 1st refrigeration system that used vapor to cool.
1844- US physician John Gorrie built a refrigerator that was used to cool the air for yellow fever patients.
1927- After several more small advancements, General Electric released the first widely used home refrigeration system which used Freon to cool.

The Boom
The new refrigerator was a lot more effective than the icebox, but people still couldn’t afford the convenience. The 1st General Electric refrigerator cost anywhere between $350-$600. This was far too steep a price for an American family during the Great Depression. It wasn’t until after WWII that the refrigerator industry really took off. By the year 1950, almost 80% of American homes were using refrigerators, compared to just 30% in the 1930’s. The refrigerator had arrived, and everyone was getting on board.

The Present & Future
Over time the refrigerator has evolved into an appliance that every home/apartment has. Their cost has gone down significantly, and their new features continue to entice people to upgrade. The refrigerator has become more advanced, but the same purpose remains. Keep food cold and safe for us to eat!

How To Deal With Refrigerator Gasket Problems

Your refrigerator gasket is the rubber seal around your door that is responsible for keeping cold air in and warm air out. The gasket takes the most abuse, and if it isn’t taken care of, it will wear out quickly. A properly-functioning gasket is essential in keeping your energy bill low, but it requires a little maintenance on your part.

Warning Signs

A door that won’t remain closed usually signals a gasket problem.
Mold or mildew build up on the gasket can limit its ability to hold a seal. It can also be dangerous to your health.

Solutions

Dampen a soft rag with warm, soapy water and gently begin cleaning your gasket.
After you are satisfied with your cleaning, begin drying the area with a clean towel.
When your lips are dry and cracked, you apply vaseline to heal them. The same holds true for your gasket. Apply a little vaseline after your cleaning to prevent the rubber seal from wearing out.
If your initial clean didn’t remove the mold or mildew, you should continue to follow along.
Mix one part bleach with two parts water in a spray bottle.
Take the spray bottle and wet the areas where you see black spots. Let that sit for about 10 minutes so the bleach can work its magic.
After the time is up, begin wiping down the areas where you applied the solution to ensure a full clean. Once you are content, wipe down the gasket with soapy water again to remove the bleach.
