Check the Supply Line
If you can hear the machine buzzing but ice isn’t coming out, it is probably a problem with your water supply line. The buzzing sound indicates that the machine is asking for water to freeze, but that water isn’t arriving. You can start addressing this problem by examining your units supply line and looking for kinks. If this happens frequently, you might want to switch over to copper tubing.

Make Sure the Fill Tube Isn’t Frozen
If your ice cubes seem to have spent time under the shrink ray, you should assume there is a problem with your fill tube. Check to see if something has caused ice to back up around the mechanism—this can cause the fill tube to freeze. Try removing the blockage and see if your cubes return to normal size.

Check on the Solenoid
The water line runs through the solenoid before it travels back to the ice maker. If the solenoid is defective, it could be the source for all kinds of refrigerator problems. To deal with a malfunctioning solenoid, unplug your fridge and remove the sediment screen. Once you have the screen out, run it under some water and give it a good clean. Not only will this give you cleaner ice, but it could fix the machine all together!

Tips For A Long-Lasting Ice Machine

Ice makers are a modern kitchen convenience, whether they are standalone or built right into your refrigerator. Unfortunately, these machines are also susceptible to breakdowns. On the bright side, many of them can be prevented by practicing good habits, such as the ones listed below.

Clean the water filter.
Your ice machine has a water filter that allows it to produce clear, tasty ice. If you don’t change the filter, it can become clogged with debris. This will reduce its effectiveness and lead to cloudy, bad-tasting ice cubes. For your health and good-quality ice, you should change your filter every six months. Refer to your owners manual for specific instructions for your unit.

Keep away from heat sources.
Ice makers are notorious for overheating. In fact, this is the leading cause of all breakdowns. Prevent this from happening by keeping yours away from heat-generating sources. These include the stove, grills, toaster ovens, and clothes dryers. You should even try to keep your ice maker out of direct sunlight if possible.

Periodically inspect supply line.
A small crack or tear in your water supply line could result in a very big, expensive problem. One of the most common issues with ice makers is burst pipes, many of which can be prevented by visual inspection. If you notice any cracks or excessive wear and tear in your water supply line, replace it immediately.

The Solution for Dirty Ice Cubes

If you
own a refrigerator with an automatic ice maker, there is a good
chance that you have experienced bad-tasting ice cubes at one point
or another. Automatic ice makers are no doubt a luxury, but one you
must occasionally tend to. There two common solutions for funny
tasting ice, so read this and figure out which one is most likely
occurring in your freezer.

Clean the water filter
Your
refrigerator’s water line has a filtration system which should be
swapped out regularly. How often depends on your particular model and
the purity of your town’s water supply, but it is good practice to
change your filter at least once every six months. Failure to do so
will result in a less-effective filter, which will allow more
minerals, chemicals, and other impurities to enter your ice maker.
The final outcome of this is your ice tasting less-than-satisfactory.
Keep your refrigerator
clean
If you
are sure that your refrigerator’s water filter doesn’t need to be
changed and your ice still tastes bad, you most likely have something
contaminating your refrigerator or freezer. Gasses and odors from
foods in both the fresh food and frozen compartments can easily be
absorbed by ice cubes. This is especially true with spoiled foods, so
make sure to clean out your fridge regularly and discard any foods
that have expired. Also make sure that all food items are tightly
wrapped in an air-tight package and your refrigerator is completely
clean of mold and mildew.
