The Most Dangerous Place in Your Fridge

The purpose of a refrigerator is to keep your food cold and safe. But without proper maintenance and cleaning, the fridge can actually become a very dangerous place. So, what part of your fridge is the most dangerous? The answer is the salad drawer, and it isn’t even close.

The Problem
Bacteria growth in salad drawers is substantially greater than the rest of the fridge. A study done in the UK found some startling results about the severity of this problem. “Tests from 30 different salad drawers found a startling number of bacteria, with an average of 7,850 bacteria colony-forming units per square centimetre (cfu/cm2). In some cases, it found 129,000 bacteria per cfu/cm2,” researchers said.

This can be linked to a series of factors, but one is more glaring than the others. Salad drawers are often left uncleaned! When you remove food from your fridge for a cleaning, make sure you remember to remove your salad drawer and clean it separately. The moisture that the salad needs to stay fresh is also providing drinking water for harmful bacterium. It might be a good idea to clean your salad drawer more frequently than the rest of your fridge.

The Solution
If you are a frequent salad eater, you might want to keep reading. This clever little trick will help keep your salad drawer safe and bacteria-free.

  1. Wash down your salad leaves in a clean sink.
  2. Once you are satisfied with the wash, place the leaves in a salad spinner and let them dry.
  3. Take a kitchen towel and line the bottom and sides of your salad drawer with it. Then, take the leaves from your salad spinner and place them on top of the towel in your drawer.
  4. Lastly, place a paper towel on top of your salad to remove any excess moisture.
  5. Enjoy your fresh, clean and crisp salad!

Storing your salad this way not only makes it taste better, but it is cleaner too. You have to change out your leaves once a week, so bacteria will never have a chance to grow!

Is Your Refrigerator as Clean as You Think It Is?

When you think of the dirtiest areas in your home, you probably picture your toilet or bathtub. But have you considered your refrigerator?

If not, it’s time to start thinking about it. Better Homes & Gardens released a list of the top ten dirtiest areas in the home, and the refrigerator made the list. Twice.

Not only is the inside of your fridge covered in germs in bacteria, but so is the outside – particularly the handle, which is one of the most frequently touched surfaces in your home.

The most concerning part about this is that your fridge holds your food. The lack of sanitation in our refrigerators could help explain why nearly 50 million Americans experience food poisoning every year.

If you want to clean up your fridge, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Cleanings should be monthly. You should give your refrigerator a thorough cleaning every 2-4 weeks. Don’t cut any corners, either. Empty your fridge, wipe down all walls, shelves, and drawers with a soapy solution, and replace your food. Throw away anything which has expired.

  • Don’t forget the exterior. As mentioned earlier, the refrigerator handle can be just as dirty – if not dirtier – than the inside. Make sure to clean the handles and entire exterior with a disinfectant wipe.

  • Vacuum your condenser coils. This isn’t for sanitary reasons, but vacuuming your coils every six months helps reduce energy consumption and extend the lifespan of your appliance.

Refrigerator Cleaning Tips

Everyone
knows how much of a chore cleaning the refrigerator can be. No matter
how much precaution you take, unpleasant odors, spills, and sticky
spots are inevitable. Use these tips from 24/7 Refrigerator Repairs
to shorten your cleaning process.
Cover your shelves in
plastic wrap.
Every
thorough cleaning of the refrigerator includes the shelves. Most of
the time, this means removing them and washing them in the sink.
While this is a very effective method to keep the inside of your
fridge looking like new, it can be time consuming. To clean your
refrigerator shelves in seconds, line them with plastic wrap. Next
time a spill occurs, simply remove the covering and your shelf is
spotless again. Just don’t forget to put another layer down
afterwards.
Start from the top.
Use
gravity to your advantage and always start cleaning from the top of
the fridge and work your way down. Starting at the top will prevent
bits of grime or dirty water from dripping down on to surfaces you
have already cleaned. When cleaning the back wall, starting from the
top will cause you to use less soap because it will trickle down and
naturally clean the lower surface.
Don’t forget the drip
pan.
Not
every refrigerator has a drip pan, but most that do often go
neglected. To check your model, remove the grill on the bottom on the
fridge and grab your flashlight. The drip pan should be easy to
identify because it is meant to be pulled out. If it is your first
time venturing down there, it may be wise to use rubber gloves. Drip
pans which have never been cleaned can be home to mildew and a
strong, unpleasant smell.
Eliminate the odors.
If a
bad smell is lingering inside of your refrigerator even after
cleaning it, don’t panic. Stick an open box of baking soda on the top
shelf and it should eliminate the odor within a day or two. For
stronger odors, sprinkle vanilla extract on cotton balls and place
them on a small dish in the refrigerator. This should have your
fridge smelling great in just minutes.
